Nexium Proton Pump Inhibitor Lawsuit Claims Severe Patient Injuries

Bradley/Grombacher LLP • Jan 04, 2018

A Nexium proton pump inhibitor lawsuit was filed due to economic damages and personal injuries sustained by a married couple and they have alleged that the manufacturing company is responsible for wrongful and negligent conduct associated with packaging, testing, development, design, manufacture, distribution and sales.

Proton Pump Inhibitor Lawsuit Lodged Against Commonly Prescribed Drug

Manufacturer AstraZeneca has been named in the Nexium proton pump inhibitor lawsuit for allegedly failing to warn consumers and physicians about the risks associated with using these drugs.

Proton pump inhibitors are some of the most frequently prescribed medications in the country. Many people acquire these drugs on a regular basis, and those who have suffered injuries claim the company hasn’t done enough to warn about the risks.

More than $15 million Americans used these prescription PPIs in 2013 with costs of more than $10 billion for those patients. PPIs are frequently indicated for treating conditions such as acid peptic disease, GERD, stomach ulcers and peptic ulcers. Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor that secretes stomach acid and reduces hydrochloric acid in the patient’s stomach.

The drug then binds with the proton pump that inhibits the gastric parietal cells to secrete gastric acid. Nexium is the most popularly sold drug from AstraZeneca and in the world market, the third most popular drug overall.

However, new patients in a Nexium proton pump inhibitor lawsuit allege severe injuries after taking the medication about which they were never properly warned. Many of the injury reports from patients state that the user develops severe or even life-threatening kidney problems after using the drug.

According to the Nexium proton pump inhibitor lawsuit, hundreds of injury reports have been submitted directly to the FDA regarding the ingestion of Nexium and other PPIs. Adverse health outcomes have been included in clinical studies, post-market surveillance and case reports.

Some of the most commonly reported injuries are those affecting the kidney, including chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury and renal or kidney failure. Those patients who took the medication and began to suffer serious side effects reported it to their doctors and then faced excessive risks of kidney injuries about which they were never warned. The Nexium proton pump inhibitor lawsuit even states that the defendants continue to represent that Nexium posed no risk of serious kidney injuries.

Any kidney injury is serious if it’s not caught quickly. Many people who suffer kidney pain tied to drugs require immediate medical care to avoid fatal injuries. Those who have suffered have filed Nexium lawsuits to hold the manufacturer accountable.

The risk of acute interstitial nephritis, one serious form of serious kidney injury, was originally raised in 1992 and another study raised those issues five years later. Hundreds of adverse event reports filed directly with the FDA closed in on these issues as well.

If you believe you or someone you know has been seriously injured as a result of proton pump inhibitors, you may have grounds to pursue an injury claim with the help of an experienced Bradley/Grombacher attorney.

The Nexium proton pump inhibitor lawsuit is Thomas v. AstraZeneca, case 2:17-cv-13038-CCC-MF, filed in the U.S. District Court District of New Jersey Newark division.
