A man was recently awarded a settlement after a collision with a USC shuttle bus left him paralyzed. According to the lawsuit, the man became a paraplegic after an accident occurred with a USC shuttle bus near Union Station.
His lawsuit against the University ended in a settlement prior to going through full stages of litigation. The details of the settlement have remained confidential; however, a press release from the University admitted negligence and that the negligence led to the injuries for the plaintiff, who became paralyzed.
The accident occurred in April of 2015, shortly after 10 pm. At the time, the plaintiff was riding his motorcycle, travelling east and the shuttle bus driver was going in the opposite direction on the same street. When that USC shuttle bus turned left in front of the plaintiff, it caused the accident that left the motorcycle rider paralyzed.
Paralyzed Man Suffered Life-Changing Injuries in Accident
The motorcyclist said that he tried to take action to avoid the accident, but had minimal opportunity to completely avoid crashing into a shuttle bus. His lawsuit alleged that the shuttle bus driver failed to take appropriate care in making a safe left turn.
The USC lawyers argued that the motorcyclist sped up as he neared to the intersection and alleged that he was travelling up to 15 miles per hour over the speed limit when the accident occurred.
According to the lawsuit, shortly before the plaintiff became paralyzed in the accident, he had completed his respiratory therapy degree and had passed two out of the three exams required to become a registered respiratory therapist. This lawsuit alleged that his ability to earn a living was significantly affected by the accident.
The plaintiff says that he now must rely on his mother for practically everything on a day-to-day basis to assist with the management of his care and injuries.
